Common Name Von Martin's Brassavola [German orchid collector and Botanist in Brazil 1800's]
Flower Size to 3" [to 7.5 cm]
Found in Bolivia, Brazil, Surinam, the Guyanas, Venezuela and Colombia in rain forests often close to rivers as a small to medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte occuring at elevations of 50 to 1000 meters with erect to ascending, slender, terete, jointed stems enveloped basally by white, scarious, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, linear, subulate, terete, fleshy coriaceous leaf that blooms from summer till autumn on a peduncle that is borne at the junction of the single leaf and terete stem on a short 3 1/4" [to 8 cm] long, several flowered inflorescence with nocturnally fragrant soapy sweet scented, long-lived flowers.
Brassavola gardneri differs mostly from B martiana in the lack of hairs on the apex of the column and B filifolia differs inthe lack of hairs along the edge of the lip as well as the apex of the column. Bot species are listed as synonmous with this species. I have kept them separate for now.
