Common Name or Meaning The Ovate Lip Cranichis

Flower Size

Found in Antioquia department of Colombia at elevations around 2500 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial with a single, basal, ovate, acuminate, rounded below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms on an erect, terminal, 6.4 to 8.4" [16 to 21 cm] long, provided with about 5 sheathing bracts, rachis 1.6 to 2" [4 to 5 cm] long, cylindrical, sublaxly 10 to 15 flowered inflorescence with elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, a bit longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying tiny flowers with glandular sepals.

Schlechter compared C ovatilabia to Cranichis stictophylla but the former is a smaller plant with an ovate leaf, a shorter inflorescence, a broadly ovate lip and a different shape to the sepals and rostellum. Unlike C stictophylla the sepals of this species are papillate on the exterior." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2020

Both C ovatilabia and C stictophylla have been cited as synonyms of Cranichis diphylla
