Found in Caldas and Cauca departments of Colombia on the edges of dense forests and in paramo at elevations of 2500 to 3000 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with a single, basal, oblong-ovate, acute to acuminate, narrowing below into the canaliculate, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the winter and summer on an erect, delicate, terete, peduncle 10 to 19.4" [25 to 48 cm] long, provided with 3 to 5, glandular towards the apex sheathing bracts, rachis 2 to 4.8" [5 to 12 cm] long, cylindrical, densely many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, glabrous, slightly longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small, glabrous flowers.

" This species shares with Cranichis mandonii and Cranichis werffii Garay 1978 the same number of veins on the sepals and petals, 3 and 1 respectively. Unlike C mandonii, C pleioneura has glabrous sepals and ovary versus sparsely glandular. and unlike C werfii its petals are ciliate along both margins versus sparsely ciliolate along the anterior margins and glabrous along the posterior one."
