Found in Sabah and Sarawak Borneo in lower montane mossy forests, in cleared, steeply sloping roadsides on sandstone and granite outcrops in full sun at elevations of 1300 to 2400 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte or lithophyte with crowded, ovoid , ovoid-elliptic to conical, smooth, becoming wrinkled with age, yellowish pseudopbulbs carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, linear, linear-ligulate, oblong to oblong-elliptic, obtuse to shortly acute or subacute and mucronate, sometimes slightly cucullate, 5 to 7 nerved, gradually attenuate and cuneate below into the sulcate, stout, fleshy petiolate base leaf that blooms in the fall on a gently curving to pendulous, much longer than the leaf, arising with a new growth, wiry, quadrangular, to 22.4" [56 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence with oblong-ovate,obtuse, mucronate bracts and ovate, apiculate, subacute to obtuse floral bracts.

D crassifolium appears to be closely related to D dewindtianum and is equally variable. but can be separated in herbarium specimens by the tough fleshy leaves of D crassifolium.
