Common Name The Purple Head Elleanthus

Found in Piura department of Peru in sclerophyllus thickets at elevations around 2900 meters as a large sized, caespitose, cold growing terrestrial orchid with a simple, leafy above stem carrying lanceolate, acute to acuminate leaves that blooms on a capitate, Congested, ovoid, 2" [5 cm] long, very densely many flowered inflorescence with 2 basal, large, concave sheaths and erect spreading, lanceolate, very acute, slightly exceeding the flowers floral bracts and carrying bright purple flowers.
"Similar to E haematoxanthus in the glabrous sepals and lip concave inthe basal half but the leaves of E porphyrocephalus are syt least half as small, longer floral bracts 1/6" 4 cm] vs 1" [2.5 cm], narrower petals and a larger lip with serrate margins." Szlatchetko & Kolanowska 2023
