LATE

Common Name Buchtien's Encyclia [Orchid Collector in Brazil and Central America 1900's]

Flower Size

Found in the Department of Cajamarca Peru, near the town of Cajamarca and Bolivia at elevations around 900 meters as a warm growing epiphyte with cylindric pseudobulbs carrying three apical, obtuse, leathery leaves and blooms in the late spring on a nodding, paniculate, 3' 4" [1 meter] long, loosely flowered inflorescence.

The species photo above was IDed by Stig Dalstrom. This species has often been given synonym status with Encyclia steinbachii but if correctly ID ed is certainly different. The original collection data by Buchtien states that this speecies has similarities to E ambigua or E trachychila and not E steinbachii.
