!Encyclia viridiflora Hooker 1828 TYPE FOR THE GENUS
Drawing by Hooker
Drawing by Carl Withner
Common Name The Green-Flowered Encyclia
Flower Size
Found In the Rio de Janiero state of Brazil with pumpkin-shaped pseudobulbs carrying 2, apical, leathery, narrow, linear-oblong, carinate beneath, acute to acuminate, conduplicate towards the base leaves that blooms on an erect, paniculate, 6 to 8 flowered per branch, many flowered inflorescence carrying non-resupinate flowers
Only known officially from the herbarium specimen housed in the Lindley Herbarium at Kew Gardens.
Kew now puts E marxiana as a synonym of this species. I dont see it. Hooker shows an acute apex to the lip midlobe . Withner's drawing is from a TYPE flower provided by Kew and shows this, but E marxiana is indented apically and the flower is not green!. SO I have left them separate for now.
Synonyms Epidendrum viridiflorum (Hook.) Lindl. 1842
