Found in French Guiana and Brazil on trees along rivers in rainforests at low elevations as a miniature to small sized, hot growing epiphyte with a simple, reed-like, strongly laterally compressed, flexuous stems carrying 4 to 6, all along the stem, coriaceous, narrowly elliptic to linear-elliptic, bilobed, margin entire, dorsally lightly carinate leaves that blooms at any time of the year on a terminal, occuring only once, sessile, 1 to 2 flowered inflorescence with much shorter than the ovary, thin, amplexicaul, ovate, obtuse floral bracts and carrying resupinate, simultaneously opening, green flowers.
"Epidendrum amapense is a member of the GROUP Difforme characterized by the caespitose, sympodial plants, fleshy, pale green to glaucous leaves, apical inflorescence, sessile, rarely with a short peduncle, one-flowered to many-flowered, and then corymbose, without spathaceous bracts, fleshy, green to yellowish-green rarely white flowers. The species can be distinguished by the small plants, the strongly compressed stems, the narrow elliptic to linear-elliptic leavea, the relatively small flowers, the lip .52 to .56" [13 to 14 mm] wide, with large lateral lobes, a much smaller, emarginate midlobe which does not surpass the lateral lobes, and the clinandrium deeply erose-dentate. Most of the other species oí this group in the Guianas and Brazil have much larger flowers, the lips .8 to 1.6" [20 to 40 mm] wide." Hagsater etal 1993
