to LATE to EARLY
Common Name The Broad Lipped Epidendrum
Flower Size 2" [5 cm]
Found in Brazil, French Guiana, Peru and Bolivia in wet montane forests low down on tree trunks and branches at elevations around 350 to 1830 meters as a small sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte that is very similar to Epidendrum difforme but differs in having an obscurely 3 lobed, very broadly transverse unicaulos labellum. The plant has strongly fractiflex, compressed, ancipitous stems, terete below, gradually broader above that has a green leaf bearing, articulated, conduplicate closed sheath at each node. The leaves are succulent looking, oblong-elliptic, oval or ovate-elliptic, basally clasping, and bilobed apically and the plant blooms in the winter and early spring on a subsessile, 4 to 7 flowered, short inflorescence with sucessively opening flowers.
"E. latilabrum is part of GROUP Difforme characterized by the caespitose, sympodial plants, fleshy, pale green to glaucous leaves, apical inflorescence, sessile, rarely with a short peduncle, one-flowered to many-flowered, and then corymbose, without spathaceous bracts, fleshy, green to yellowish-green rarely white flowers. The species is from Brazil which has laterally compressed stems, successive, green and larger flowers, semiorbicular to subrectangular laterallobes and subcuadrate midlobe. Epidendrum panegyricum can be recognized by its ancipitose stems, 2 to 3 simultaneous, pale green flowers, 3-lobed lip, elliptic lateral lobes and transversely rectangular midlobe, straight, obconical column. to It differs from E. difforme from Lesser Antilles, which also has ancipitous stems, smaller plants and smaller green flowers, lip with subquadrate midlobe and occasionally arcuate column."
