Common Name Maduro's Epidendrum [Panamanian Orchid enthusiast current]

Found in Chiriqui province of Panama in cloud forests at elevations of 2000 to 3000 meters as a medium sized, cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with simple, canelike, ancipitous towards the apex stems carrying all along the stem, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, narrowly cuneate below into the base leaves that blooms at least in the winter and spring on a terminal, pluriracemose, straight to arcuate, peduncle, long, ancipitous, bialate, 4.8 to 8" [4 to 20 cm] long, succcessively 1 to 2, 5 to 15 flowered inflorescence with 1 to 2 oblong-triangular, acute conduplicate bracts and shorter than the ovary, conduplicate, ovate-elliptic, obtuse, slightly mucronate, imbricate, completely covering the rachis floral bracts.

"Epidendrum maduroi is part of the GROUP Alberti SUBGROUP Allenii characterized by the sympodial habit with laterally compressed to ancipitous to fusiform-thickened stems giving rise to both terminal and lateral, racemose, distichous inflorescence with more or less imbricating bracts and carrying a single successive flower. The species can be recognized by its sepals and petals bronze-green, the apple-green and subreniform lip, .24 to .32" [6 to 8 mm] wide, the arcuate column and short clinandrium. Epidendrum lankesteri has a subrounded to subovate lip, slightly lobulate toward the basal half, .16" [4 mm] wide, straight column and prominent clinandrium. Epidendrum adnatum Ames & C. Schweinf. has narrower leaves and floral bracts, ovate, acute lip ca. .16" [4 mm] wide, disc 3-carinate and with a prominent clinandrium. Epidendrum jefeallenii Hágsater & Carda-Cruz has narrower leaves and floral bracts, and a cordiform, emarginate lip." Hagsater etal 1999
