Found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua in wet montane forests at elevations of 400 to 2400 meters as a medium to giant sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte or lithophyte on sheer rock cliffs with a straight to zigzag main stem carrying lanceolate-ligulate leaves and secondary and tertiary stems carrying smaller ones that blooms in the fall and winter on a terminal, arising on the secondary and tertiary stems, arcuate, zigzag, simultaneously 4 to 8 flowered inflorescence with conduplicate, prominent, from longer to twice as long as the ovary, ovate, acute floral bracts carrying resupinate, fragrant flowers.

"Epidendrum mixtum belongs to the GROUP Ramosum and is recognized by the erect, branching habit, fragrant white flowers produced from the apex of the secondary-tertiary branchlets, the rachis zigzag, floral bracts much longer than the ovary, floral segments .36 to .52" [9 to 13 mm] long and the lip triangular and acute. E ramosum has smaller green flowers.
