Found in northernmost Ecuador on roadside banks on the western slope of the Andes at elevations around 3000 meters as a mini-miniature to small sized, cold growing terrestrial with terete, mature stems branching, branches shorter, erect stems carrying all along the stems, subcoriaceous, narrowly oblong, unequally bilobed, margin erose denticulate leaves that blooms in the spring on a terminal, without a spathe, from the main stem and the branches, racemose to paniculate, nutant, occurring only once, successively few, 4 to 8 flowered inflorescence with longer than the ovary, triangular to lanceolate, oblong, acute to long-acuminate, dorsally verrucose floral bracts and carrying resupinate, old rose colored on white flowers.
"Epidendrum rhodanthum is recognized by its small, branching, caespitose plants with small, fleshy, white and old rose-colored flowers produced in succession, the transversely elliptic lip enveloping the column, sepals .36" [8.5 mm] Epidendrum rhombochilum which is sympatric and the more common species, has bronzy yellow-green successive flowers, the sepals .18" [4.5 mm] long, and the lip about as long as it is wide."
