Common Name The Rhomboid Lip Epidendrum

Found in southwestern and southcentral Colombia on the western slope of the cordillera Central and Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations of 3400 to 3450 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing orchid that blooms in the winter on a terminal, 1 to few flowered inflorescence.

"Epidendrum rhombochilum is part of GROUP Elleanthoides SUBGROUP Rhombochilum characterized by thin, branching stems carrying narrow, grassy leaves and has a hair-thin peduncle of the inflorescence and carries successively opening, small delicate flowers. The species which is sympatric to E rhodanthum and the more common species, has bronzy yellow-green successive flowers, the sepals .18" [4.5 mm] long, and the lip about as long as it is wide. Epidendrum rhodanthum is recognized by its small, branching, caespitose plants with small, fleshy, white and old rose-colored flowers produced in succession, the transversely elliptic lip enveloping the column, sepals .38" [8.5 mm] long.
