Found in Colombia and Ecuador at elevations of 900 to 2500 meters as a large to giant sized, warm to cold growing epiphytic or lithophytic orchid with erect, simple, cane-like leafy stems carrying distichous, alternate, to 12, all along the upper half of the stem, dark green, oblong-ligulate, obtuse, coriaceous leaves that blooms in the winter on a terminal, peduncle elongate, subcorymbose-abbreviate, racemose, to 24" {60 cm} long, densely, successively 12 to 16, many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate floral bracts and carrying non-resupinate, white, non fragrant flowers.

"Epidendrum schistochilum is part of GROUP Secundum SUBGROUP Secundum Characterized by the caespitose habit, the numerous coriaceous leaves, the generally elongate peduncle to pluriracemose inflorescence with brightly colored flowers generally pollinated by hummingbirds, with the caudicles of the pollinarium granulose, and the tetrads appearing like a loose stack of roof tiles. The species is recognized by the large, erect plants, distichous leaves, numerous, successive, non-resupinate flowers. The flowers are snow white with a thick, triangular, three-lobed, orange callus in the middle of the three-lobed, fimbriate lip." Karremans 2018
