Found in Jalisco state of Mexico in pine/oak forests at elevations around 2500 meters as a small, sized, cold growing, inconspicuous terrestrial with an erect, thin, cylindrcal, ribbed, leafy throughout stem carrying 7, cauline, leathery, rectilinear, adpressed, larger above, the larger ones located in the middle of the plant, narrow, lanceolate, acuminate, green, with three main nerves raised in glandular carinas, the hyaline edged leaves that blooms in the summer on an erect, terminal, rachis 3" [7.5 cm] long, in a sparse cluster, cylindrical, 13 flowered inflorescence with conduplicate, shallow concave, hidden from the ovary, narrow and lanceolate ovadolanceolate, acuminate, 6.7 to 20 mm long, 4 to 6 mm wide, with a carina, lowest longer than the flowers above as long as the ovary floral bracts.
"Habenaria atrocalcarata is related to H. filifera but differs in the 11.2" [28 cm] tall plant the largest narrow, lanceolate, acuminate leaves located in the middle of the plant, the inflorescence in a sparse raceme; the lowermost floral bracts longer than the flowers and as long as the ovary above; the dorsal sepal .2" [5 mm] long, .14" [3.5 mm] wide; the lateral sepals ovate-lanceolate, .22" [5.5 mm] long,.21" [3mm] wide; the posterior lobe of the petals attenuated, sharp, .16" [4 mm] long, .04" [1 mm] wide; the anterior lobe about .28" [7 mm] long,.02" [ 0.5 mm] wide; the lateral lobes of labellum cintiform, rounded; the middle lobe oblong, attenuated at the apex, sharp, rounded, about .24" [6 mm] long, .04" [1 mm] wide and the nectary acinaciform in general contour and .48" [12 mm] long. Habenaria atrocalcarata could be confused by the appearance of the foliage with H. magnibracteata , but is distinguished by the plants 6.8 to 10.6" [17 to 26.5 cm] tall; the ovate-lanceolate, acute leaves with the largest in the lower half of the plant, 1.6 to 2.28" 94 to 5.7 cm] long, .52 to 1" [1.3 to 2.5 cm] wide".
