Common Name Cogniaux's Habenaria [Belgian Botanist in Brazil late 1800's- early 1900's]

Flower Size .2" [5 mm]

Found in Colombia and Azuay province of Ecuador at elevations of 2000 to 2900 meters as asmall sized, cold growing terrestrial with 2 to 3 just above the base, in a rosette, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, acute to obtus, the uppermost conspicuously smaller, sessile leaves with an erect, remotely sheathed, stem with the sheaths rather loose fitting, that blooms in the spring on an erct, loosely several flowered inflorescence wih ovate-lanceolae, acuminate, as long a to shorter than the ovary floral bracts.

Similar to H distans , H herminioides and H millei which all have a basal rosette of leaves. The spur of H herminoides and H millei are more or less narrowly subclavate, slightly thickened above the middle, in contrast to H distans and H cogniauxiana that have filiform spur that is not thickened at all. In H cogniauxiana the anterior petal lobe is .28 to .32" [7 to 8 mm] and occasionally reduced to a small lobule .06" [1.5 mm] versus up to .14" [3.5 mm] in H distans while the posterior lobe is about .2 to .26" [5 to 6.5 mm] long, and acute versus .2" [5 mm] long and truncate to obtuse in H cogniauxiana. The spur of H distans is shorter .48 to .52" [12 to 13 mm] long versus in H cogniauxiana .52 to .72" [13 to 18 mm] long." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2017
