Found in Cauca department of Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Minas Gerais state of Brazil and Argentina in grasslands at elevations of 900 to 1000 [2300 meters Hoehne 1940] as a medium to large sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with an erect robust, stem enveloped basally by 2 to 3, adpressed sheaths grading into many, blue green, somewhat ascending, ovoid-lanceolate, acute, 5 nerved, grading smaller above leaves that blooms in the summer through early fall on an erect, 4 to 8" [10 to 20 cm] long, laxly many flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, greenish yellow florla bracts and carrying erect-patent, emerald green flowers.
+"This species is very similar to H alata , known from northern South America and Central America, and a detailed investigation is still necessary to determine the exact relation between them. The only records of H. hexaptera in northern Brazil are from the " cerrados" over white sand of the Alto Tapajós. Flowers are completely green and the species is typical of dry places"
