Found in Jalisco state of Mexico in pine/oak forest, at elevations around 1900 to 1920 meters as a small sized, cool growing, colony forming terrestrial with a creeping, flattened, oblong-ovoid, obtuse, tuber giving rise to an erect, cylindrical stem carrying 7 to 12, the first two to four withered, reduced to sheaths, imbricate, the following erect, ovate, elliptical to lanceolate, the largest below half of the plant, 4 bractsed, the last adpressed, each time resembling floral bracts, almost flat, furrowed, along the three main nerves, the the latter are conduplicated with recurved edges, light green leaves that blooms in the late summer and early fall on a terminal, erect, rachis 2 to 4" [5 to 10 cm] long, somewhat dense, cylindrical, 8 a 20 flowered inflorescence with concave, lanceolate, acuminate, longer than the flower floral bracts.
"Habenaria inexspectata is close to H. filifera ., and differs in plant from 9.6 to 11.2" [23 to 28 cm] high; the first two to four leaves withered, reduced to sheaths, the next erect, ovate, elliptical to lanceolate, the largest 1.32 to 2.4" [3.3 to 6 cm] long, .48 to .8" [1.2 to 2 cm] wide, almost flat; the inflorescence in cluster is not very dense; the dorsal sepal is suborbicular-ovate, obtuse rounded, .16 to .18" [4 to 4.5 mm] long, .14 to .16" [3.5 to 4 mm] wide; the oblong lateral sepals, .18 to .2" [4.5 to 5 mm] long; the posterior lobe of the petal is .14" [3.5 mm] long;the anterior lobe .2 to .36" [5 to 9 mm] long; the lateral lobes of the labellum .24 to .46" [6 to 11.5 mm] long; the linear, acute median lobe, is .24" [6 mm] long; the nectary islinear-claviform and the rostellum arms and anther channels exceed the stellidia by .0122" [.35 mm]. In H. filifera the dorsal sepal is ovate, from .24" [6 mm] long; the posterior segment of the petals attenuated and .24" [6 mm] long; the median segment equally as long; the lateral lobes of the are as long as the middle lobe; the nectary is slightly larger than the ovary and well exceeds the middle lobe of the labellum which is relatively narrower."
