Found in Yunnan China, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam in forests, thickets and grasslands at elevations of 1900 to 3500 meters as a small to medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with ovoid-ellipsoid to oblong, fleshy tubers giving rise to an erect, terete, stout stem carrying 4 to 7, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, acuminate to acute, amplexicaul into the base leaves without sterile bracts that blooms in the late spring through summer on an erect, 2 to 8" [5 to 20 cm] long, loosely 3 to 20 flowered inflorescence with a 2 to 6.8" [5 to 17 cm] long rachis carrying ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, basal ones about as long as the ovary floral bracts

This species is within a group of similar orchids consisiting of H davidii, H arietina, H intermedia, H triquetra, H yueana, H mairei and H pectinata which all have trilobed lips with the two lateral sides with fringe.
