Found in Jalisco state of Mexico in glens, among rocks in tropical deciduous forest, in the shade of trees at elevations of 1000 to 1600 meters as a medium to just large sized, cool growing terrestrial with a vertical, ellipsoid, truncate tuber giving rise to an erect, thinner than in the other species of the section, cylindrical, .16 to .24" [4 to 6 mm] in diameter at the base, somewhat angled upwards stem carrying eight, cauline, the first three end in a very small to no lamina that is also revolute, ascending, membraceous, furrowed, carinate, produce well-developed, cuneate, , 10 to 14 cm long, 3.5 to 4.4 cm wide, light green, the last two similar in all respects to the floral bracts, the foliar, sheaths do not overlap, elliptical, obtuse, the apex reflex como un apcule leaves that blooms in the late summer and earliest fall on an erect, terminal, 3.6 to 7.2" [9 to 18] cm long, in a loose cluster, 8 to 12 flowered inflorescence with cuneate, lanceolate, acuminate, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying soap scented, fragrant flowers.
"Habenaria santanae is related to H. oreophila , but H santanae differs in the three leaves ending in a lamina or lack it, eight produce a sheath well developed, cuneate, elliptical, obtuse; flowers with a light, nocturnal aroma; the ovate, emarginate dorsal sepal; the posterior lobe of the petals dilated at the base on the posterior margin in a small atrium, falcate, .76" [1.9 mm] wide; the anterior lobe filiform, .8 to 1.2" [20 to 30 mm] long; the side lobes of the labellum are filiform, acuminate, 1.08" to 3.2" [27 to 28 mm] long; .72" [1.8 mm] wide, the middle lobe and linear nectary arched. In H. oreophila the basal leaves are reduced to sheaths, when they ascend they develop lamina, elliptical, oblong-elliptic or lanceolate, acute or obtuse; thy e flowers with a smell reminiscent of soap, perceptible day and night; the dorsal sepal suborbicular-ovate, obtuse; the posterior lobe of the petals dilated at the base in the posterior margin, slightly constricted forward of the dilated part, deltoidal cal, 1.04" [2.6 mm] wide; the anterior lobe semi-cylindrical, .56 to .72" [14 to 18] mm long, the anterior lobube semi-cylindrical, .56 to .72" [14 to 18 mm] long; the lateral lobes of the labellum are linear, .88 to .92".
