Broughtonia R. Brown SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae. A genus of 5 species, most in the Caribbean. It is typified with flattened ovoid closely packed psuedobulbs with 2 apical stiff leaves. The inflorescence arises from the apex of the psuedobulb and the flowers open sequentially over months. They like warm even conditions with bright light. They are allied to the Cattleya and are used often in breeding, such as the intergeneric cross Cattletonia. I find they are happiest mounted on tree branches and they can be affected easily by scale so occasional spraying with orthene 2 is called for.
