Common Name or Meaning The White, Yellow and Purple Kollensteinia

Found in Zamora Chinchipe province of Ecuador on grassy roadbanks at elevations around 1000 to 1100 meters as a large sized, warm to cool growing terrrestrial with a short rhizome giving rise to subspherical, heteroblastic pseudobulbs enveloped by foliaceous linear, papyraceous, multi-veined, apex slightly acuminate and truncate base sheaths and carrying a single, lanceolate to oblanceolate, medium to dark green, smooth, coriaceous, with a satiny sheen, parallel venation, entire margin, slightly arching, subcartilaginous, plicate, conduplicate with veins channeled abaxially, with an acute-apiculate apex, basally attenuate into a petiolate base leaf that blooms in the summer, fall and winter on a single, erect, lateral, peduncle 7.4" [18.5 cm] long, brownish, becoming yellowish-green towards the apex, cylindrical, enveoped by light green, amplexicaul, broadly triangular, acuminate apex bracts, rachis green, about 9.4" [23.5 cm] long, simultaneously approximately 22 flowered inflorescence with green, lanceolate, acute apex with a truncate base carrying odorless, resupinate, and pedicellate, ranging from luteous yellow to golden with purple marked flowers
"Similar to Koellensteinia ionoptera Linden & Rchb.f. 1871 but it differs mainly in the coloration of the flowers, which are yellow with purple spots, vs. white flowers with wine-colored hues. The lip is rhomboid, trilobed, with more pronounced purple spots on the lobes, and a whitish, barely bilobed callus, vs. an oval, trilobed lip with wine-colored lines and a prominent, yellow, bilobed callus. Column with thin wings, vs. column wings, much wider. Petals and sepals lanceolate, broadly acuminate, vs. sepals and petals oval, apex acute, slightly rounded in Koellensteinia ionoptera.."
