Common Name The Spurred Masdevallia [refers to the deeply conical mentum of the flower]
Flower Size .8" [2 cm]
Found in Peru without locality data as a mini-miniature sized, caespitose epiphyte with stout, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3, loose, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, broadly elliptical, obtuse to rounded, contracted below into the elongate petiolate base leaf, that blooms in the later summer on a slender below becoming stout above, arising from low on the ramicaul, with a bract on the lower quarter, erect, 2.8" [7 cm] long peduncle, single flowered inflorescence with a tubular, much shorer than the pedicel floral bract and holding the single flower well above that leaf.
"A small plant with broadly elliptical leaves with a slender petiole. The strict peduncle is slender below, but becomes stout with a stout pedicel a considerable distance above the leaf. The creamy white flower with its conspicuous, retrorse mentum is proporitonally large for the plant. A similar but muchsmaller mentum occurs in M caudata and its allies. The junction between the dorsal and lateral sepals protrudes with an acute, ear-like angle." Luer 2005
