Common Name or Meaning Wuelfinghoff's Masdevallia [German Orchid Enthusiast current]

Found in Zamora-Chinchipe province of southern Ecuador at elevations around 1800 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cool growing, caepitose epiphyte with erect, slender, blackish ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose, blackish tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, obtuse to rounded, cuneate below into the blackish petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring on a slender, arising from low on the ramicaul, provided with a bract at the base, erect, 2 to 2.4" [5 to 6 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with a tubular, shorter than the pedicel floral bract.
" Closely allied to the M xanthina complex but it is immediately separated by the intense, red-purple color of the sepals. It also differs i the dorsal sepal being flat and convex instead of concave and the eptals with the marginal callus ending in a short angle at the base instead of a thick protruding process."
