Common Name The Pit Pleurothallis [Refrees to the deeply depressed glenion on the lip]
Flower Size
Found in Costa Rica at elevations around 750 to 2400 meters as a small sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte with slender, erect ramicauls with a tubular sheath in the lower third and 2 others at the base and carrying a single, suberect to horizontal, coriaceous, ovate to oblong-ovate, acute leaf that blooms in the winter through mid summer on a fascile of successive or a few simultaneous, single flowers arising through a broad, more or less inflated, suberect spathe and has a tubular shorter than the ovary floral bract.
Superficially resembles many others in the SUBGENUS Pleurothallis SECTION Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae Lindl 1859 but it is distinguished by the thickly coriaceous, horizontal, cordate leaves and a broad, suberect spathe from which one or several fleshy, pale colored flowers emerge. The sepals and petals are entire and obtuse. The glenion of the lip is developed into a deep central cavity." Luer 1996
Differs from all others in the Section by the ramicauls and elliptical-obovate leaves equal in length and a fascile of thick, fleshy, light green flowers. The dorsal sepal is obtuse and three veined, the petals are oblong and acute and the glenion near the center of the thick, oblong-ovate, obtuse lip is deeply depressed." Luer 2005
