Found in Carchi province of Ecuador at elevations around 1950 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with spreading to erect, stout ramicauls with a close tubular sheath near the middle and 2 to 3 others at the base and carrying a single, apical, horizontal to spreading, coriaceous, broadly ovate, acute, acuminate, deeply cordate below into the sessile base leaf that blooms in the fall on a fascile, arising through and enveloped by a reclining spathe at the base of the leaf, of solitary successivly 1 to 4 at once, several flowered inflorescence with a shorter to just as long as the pedicel floral bract.
"The species bears 1 to 4, single flowers simultaneously on top of a lareg, cordate leaf. The flowers are most remarkable for their intense, deep,purple color which is accentuated by the bright white of the lower half of the dorsal sepal. Protruding from the centeer of the flower is the unique lip, thickened with an elevated disc outlined by a high, rounded margin above the minutely fringed edge of the lip." Luer 2005
