Found in Alajuela province of Costa Rica in humid forests at elevations around 1200 meters as a small to just medium sized, cool growing epiphyte with terete, erect ramicauls enveloped by sheaths and carrying a single, apical, papyraceous, narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, cuneate below in to the canaliculate, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the late summer and early fall on a pendent, deflexed, peduncle rigid, flexuous, provided with a bracts, 1.2" [3 cm] long, rachis 1.2 to 1.6" [3 to 4 cm] long, several flowered inflorescence.
Often confused with P johnsonii and P herrarae but this species has larger plants that only produce basal inflorescence, yellow sepals with long conspicuous hairs and lanceolate petals. P herrerae has longer acuminate sepals without the conspicuous hairs and has a pair of large uncinate lobes on the lip.
