Common Name Lilija's Pleurothallis [Mrs. Foldats, assisted in orchid studies with her husband Dr Ernesto Foldats]

Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]

Found in Merida state of Venezuela, Norte de Santander, Santander and Putumayo departments of Colombia, Carchi, Sucumbios, Pichincha, Napo, Morona-Santiago, Cañar, Azuay and Zamora-Chinchipe provinces of Ecuador and La Paz department of Bolivia at elevations of 2000 to 3400 meters as a miniature to small sized cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with slender, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths and carries a single, apical erect, coriaceous, elliptic-lanceolate, acute apex with an apicule, basally rounded with the basal margin incurved leaf and blooms in the summer on a descending, arising from the apex of the ramicaul, short, single flowered inflorescence with a shorter than the pedicel floral bract..

Part of the Pleurothallis cardiostola/Pleurothallis lilijae complex. The juvenile leaves are erect, elliptical, acute and not cordate at the base as seen in related species. Most often the cordate, mature leaves are acutely deflexed on the ramicaul with the cordate, basal lobes more or less erect and incurved. The leaves are generally longer than those of P cardiostola usually curving upward beyond the middle. The resupinate flowers emerge from a reclining to a more of less erect, conspicuous spathe. Most commonly the flowers are mottled and suffused with purple or brown. The sepals are variably cellular-glandular to shortly pubescent. The synsepal, with longitudinally revolute sides, is usually considerably narrower than the dorsal sepal. The spathulate petals are usually pubescent and widely expanded. The thick, oblong-ovate lip protrudes erect from beneath the column. The disc is shallowly cleft above the middle." Luer 2005
