Found in Alajuela, Puntrenas and Heredia provinces of Costa Rica, Chiriqui and Darien provinces of Panama, Antioquia, Choco', Tolima, Narińo and Cauca departments of Colombia and Esmeraldas province of Ecuador at elevations of 350 to 1750 meters as a miniature sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with slender, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 close, tubular sheaths and another below the middle carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, ovate, acute leaf with a sessile, broadly cuneate base that blooms in the winter on an erect, suberect to arching, arising from a slender spathe, lax, distichous, simultaneously few to several flowered, 2" to 5 3/4" [5 to 14 cm] long, racemose inflorescence with a half as long as the pedicel floral bract.
Characterized by the ovate leaf more or less as long a s the ramicaul and a more or less equally long, lax raceme of relatively large, purple flowers. The sepals are acute, the petals are denticulate and held downward along the side of the lip and the anterioir lobe of te triangular lip is acute. This species and P gomezii are similar but it differs in having slightly larger flowers with acuminate sepals and long-acuminate petals." Luer 1998
