Common Name The Giant Pleurothallis
Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]
found in Chiriqui province of Panama and Valle de Cauca department of Colombia in cloud forsts at elevations of 1000 to 1300 meters as a large sized, cool growing, caespitose epiphyte that is with erect, stout ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3, close, tubular sheaths and another below the middle and carrying a single, apical, suberect to spreading, coriaceous, ovate, acute, acuminate, basally sessile and deeply cordate leaf that blooms in the winter and spring on a reclining, arising through a reclining spathe, successively single, few flowered inflorescence with tubular, shorter than the ovary floral bract and holding the large flower close against the leaf base.
"Similar to P cardiothallis but the flowes of the mew species are twice to three times larger. The sheild shaped lip is concave and usually widest above the middle with thick, incurved margins, below the middle the lip is convex." Luer 2005
