Found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in wet montane forests at elevations of 2800 to 3100 as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial or occasional pubescent epiphyte with 2 to 3, basal, pubescent, elliptic, acute, gradually narrowing below into the conduplicate, petiollate base leaves that blooms in the summer on an erect, terminal, terete, pulverulent, to 10" [to 25 cm] long, successively many flowered inflorescence carrying non-resupinate flowers
Distinguished by the villose ovary contrastiong with the glabrous flowers and the petals with small teeth at the base of the lobe, a highly unusual feature in the genus. This species is very similar to Ponthieva similis but differs in the small teeth on the petals and the obtuse free apices of the lateral sepals." Bennett & Christenson 2001
