Common Name The Leafy Stem Pseudocentrum

Flower Size

Found in Imbabura province of Ecuador and Amazonas department Peru in cloud forests at elevations of 2000 to 2400 meters as a large to giant sized, cold growing terrestrial with an erect stem enveloped by 6, cauline, elliptic, acute, sessile leaves that blooms in the fall on an erect, peduncle [35 cm] long, provided with 4, non-foliaceous sheaths, rachis to 16.8" [42 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence with ovate, obtuse, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying green, ciliate flowers with a white lip and petals and the sepals extremely ciliate.

This species resembles Pseudocentrum macrostachyum , Pseudocentrum purdii and Pseudocentrum tandayapense but unlike these species its leaves are distributed along the the stem and the lateral sepals are almost completely connate but the free apices are obtuse. In contrast Pseudocentrum purdii has a narrrowly conical sepaline spur that is blunt at the apex and a saccate lip with a deep apical part. It differs from Pseudocentrum macrostachyum in the sepaline spur that is twice as long as the ovary and from Pseudocentrum tandayapense, the only other species known with the leaves distributed along the stem, differs in the petals with truncate apices."
