Common Name The Large Flower Sarcoglottis
Flower Size .68" [1.7 cm]
Found in Surianam, Guyana, Cundinamarca and Amazonas departments of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Matto Grosso, Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio de Janiero states of Brazil and Corrientes department of Argentina at elevations of 280 to 1300 meters in lowland wet forests, selva to seasonally dry, montane, cloud forests as a medium to large sized, hot growing, terrestrial herb with thick, fleshy roots, narrowly elliptical, white mottled, acute, basally clasping, gradually taper to the conduplicate base leaves that blooms in the spring through fall on a terminal, erect, peduncle 14 to 20" [35 to 50 cm] long, provided with 5 to 7 tubular, acuminate sheathing bracts, rachis 2.4 to 8" [6 to 20 cm] long, few to many flowered inflorescence with tubular, acute, as long as the ovary floral bracts.
"S grandifora shares with Sarcoglottis neglecta a similar form of the lateral sepals, which are almost straight when flatteened and recurved by bending. The lip epichile of S grandiflora is ecallose or the callus consists of some parallel keels along the line of epichile bending. The lip of S neglecta is adorned with a more or less v-shaped thickening near the base." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
