Found in Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, southern Yunnan, Assam, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Andaman Islands, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam in moist shady locales in tropical rain, seasonal evergreen, hill evergreen, mixed deciduous,open scrub and bamboo forests at elevations of 20 to 1600 meters as a miniature to small sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial with an erect stem carrying 4 to 6, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, herbaceous, shortly petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall through spring on a terminal, erect, racemose, 4 to 10 flowered, pubescent inflorescence with lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, brownish, pubescent bracts

This species and Z grandis are very similar and may be synomonous and if so then this species takes precedence.
