Common Name The Xima Bulbophyllum [a town in Yunnan province of China]

Flower Size .12" [3 mm]

Found in Yunnan province of China on the trunks of trees in montane forest at an elevation of 1600 to 1750 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cool growing epiphyte with a creeping rhizome enveloped by papery tubular sheaths with .4 to 1" [1 to 2.5 cm] between each ellipsoid pseudobulb carrying a single, apical, erect, oblong, leathery, acute, subsessile base leaf that blooms in the spring on 1 to rarfely 2, erect, basal, peduncle .02" [8 mm] long, provided with 2 tubular sheaths .24 to .6" [.6 to 1.5 cm] long overall, rachis short, 6 to 17 flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, concave, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying the flowers in an apical umbel.

"B. ximaense is morphologically similar to Bulbophyllum sutepense (Rolfe ex Downie) Seidenf. & Smitin. and Bulbophyllum caudatum Lindl. in floral morphology, but can be distinguished from the former by having distant pseudobulbs (vs. contiguous), an inflorescence with 9–16 flowers (vs. 4- or 5-flowers), and triangular-subulate stelidia (vs. deltoid to broadly triangular). It can be distinguished from the latter by having a scape ca. 0.6–0.8 cm long (vs. 1–3 cm long), orange-red flowers (vs. white), lateral sepals 0.5–0.6 cm long, with a long acuminate apex, incurved and tubular apical margins (vs. 2.5–3.5 cm long, apex long caudate, apical margins not tubular), and a papillate lip disk (vs. without papillate)."
