Common Name Madero's Cyclopogon [Colombian Orchid Enthusiast 1900's]

Flower Size

Found in Cauca department of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru at elevations around 2500 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial with 3 to 4, basal, in a rosette, erect, patent, elliptic, acuminate, subpetiolate base leaves that blooms on a terminal, erect, peduncle 7.8 to 9" [19.5 to 22.5 cm] long, provided with about 10, acuminate sheathing bracts, rachis 1.4 to 2.2" [3.5 to 5.5 cm] long, secund, many flowered inflorescence with elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, slightly longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small flowers.

According to Schlechter this species resembles Cyclopogon macer but differs in the shorter leaf blade and the lip form. Much smaller leaves separte C maderoi from both Cyclopogon argyrotaenius and C spiranthoides. The flowers of C argyrotaenius are twice as large as C maderoi. The flowers of C spiranthoides are mopre or less the same size but the lip epichile is flabellate to quadrate-reniform versus braodly obovate with the margins subcrenulate-undulate."
