Common Name The Guiana Encyclia

Flower Size .8 to 1" [2 to 2.5 cm]

Found in Bolivar state of Venezuela, Guyana and Surinam in wet tropical forests at elevations around 100 to 500 meters as a mini-miniature to medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with an abbreviated rhizome giving rise to pyriform pseudobulbs carrying 1 to 2[3] broad, short, ligulate, stiff, obtuse, obscurely bilobed leaves that blooms in the winter on an erect, paniculate, 2 to 4 branched, each branch 2 to 5 flowered, 6 to 10" [15 to 25 cm] long, verriculose, densely several flowered inflorescence with loose, inconspicuous floral bracts and carrying resupinate, wide open, long lived flowers.

The Authors stated in their type description that the photo by Marga Wrkhoven was this species so it is absolutely correct.

Similar to E ceratistes such as the narrow floral segements and the ovate, acute central lobe of the lip, but E guinanesis is a smaller plant with shorter and denser inflorescence, the pedicellate ovaries are veruculose, differently colored tepals and the lateral lobes of the lip are longer and narrower. Moreover the wings of the column are better developed.

This species is a part of the Encyclia oncidioides complex and most likely is a synonym of it along with, E dickinsoniana , Enc gravida, Enc mooreana, Enc stellata, and Enc guianensis and Enc guatemalensis.
