Found in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Chiri ui province of Panama as a medium sized, cool to cold growing epiphytic species found in lower montane cloud forests on larger branches with shade at an elevations of 1250 to 2100 meters with pyriform to conic pseudobulbs subtended by a basal, papery bract and with 2 to 3, apical, oblanceolate, fleshy, obtuse and bilobed apically, conduplicate and clasping below leaves that blooms in the late spring and summer on an apical, 20" to 6'+ [50 to 200 cm] long, heavily paniculate inflorescence arising on a newly mature pseudobulb with many fragrant [honey] flowers.
" When in flower, the purple lip, the broadened lateral lobes and the fragrance of honey easily distinguish this species from others in Costa Rica. Sterile plants of E mooreana are sifficult to distinguish from E ceratistes. J T Atwood 1992
This species is a part of the Encyclia oncidioides complex and most likely is a synonym of it along with, E dickinsoniana , Enc gravida, Enc mooreana, Enc stellata, and Enc guianensis and Enc guatemalensis.
