Common Name Garcia's Epidendrum [Brazilian Discoverer of Species 1900's]

Found in Bahia state of Brazil at elevations around 50 meters as a miniature sized, hot growing epiphyte found on cacoa tree trunks in partial shade with simple, laterally compressed, erect to somewhat flexuous stems carrying 2 to 4, ovate, bilobed, green leaves that blooms in the fall and winter on an apical, sessile inflorescence with shorter than the ovary, triangular, acute floral bracts carrying 1 to 2, simultaneous, resupinate flowers with an intense, sweet fragrance at night and sunup.
"Epidendrum garciae belongs to the GROUP Difforme which is characterized by the caespitose, sympodial plants, fleshy, pale green to glaucous leaves, apical inflorescence, sessile, rarely with a short peduncle, one-flowered to corymbose, without spathaceous bracts, fleshy, green to yellowish-green rarely white flowers. The species can be recognized by its laterally compressed stems, single-flowered inflorescence, very sweetly fragrant flower at night and sunup, sepals and petals greenish-white, column green, lip white, spatulate petals, transversely oblong, 3-lobed lip, lateral lobes semi-elliptic, midlobe shorter than the lateral lobes, emarginate forming two semiorbicular lobes, column somewhat arcuate. Frequently confused with Epidendrum latilabrum Lindl., another Brazilian species, which has 2 to 4, green flowers, lip four times broader than long. Epidendrum althausenii A.D.Hawkes from Amazon basin has 1 to 3, green flowers, a sub-quadrate lip, and prominent clinandrium-hood." Hagsater etal 2009
