Common Name The Linear Leafed Difforme Group Epidendrum

Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]

Found in French Guiana and Surinam near the coast at lower elevations as a mini-miniature sized, hot growing epiphyte with simple, reed-like, terete, flexuose stems carrying 2 to 3, ascending, linear-lanceolate, bilobed apically leaves that blooms in the winter on an apical, sessile, single flowered inflorescence with a floral bract that is much shorter than the ovary and carrying resupinate flowers.

"Epidendrum linearidifforme is part of the GROUP Difforme characterized by the caespitose, sympodial plants, fleshy, pale green to glaucous leaves, apical inflorescence, sessile, rarely with a short peduncle, one-flowered to many-flowered, and then corymbose, without spathaceous bracts, fleshy, green to yellowish-green rarely white flowers. The species can be recognized by its short plants, with terete, flexuose stems, linear-lanceolate ascending leaves, 2.2 x .24" [5.5 x 0.6 cm], elliptic to oblanceolate sepals, linear-oblanceolate petals, 3-lobed lip, lateral lobes subsquare. It is similar to Epidendrum amapense which is 4.8 to 6.8" [12 to 17 cm] tall, with elliptic leaves, semiovate lateral lobes of the lip and a prominent, deeply erose-dentate clinandrium. Epidendrum oldemanii E. A. Christenson has 3 to 5, 4 to 4.8" x .64" [10 to 12 x 1.6 cm] elliptic leaves, single veined petals, reniform-bilobulate lip without any midlobe, strongly convex, column with hooded, fringed, dentate clinandrium. The other species with linear leaves is E. angustatum (Hashimoto) Hágsater, from Ecuador which has terete stems, 9 to 11 leaves, 3 simultaneous flowers with an entire, reniform lip."
