Found in Minas Gerais state of Brazil in grassy savanna, but seems to be variable in relation to its water requirements growing in seasonally humid areas on dark hydromorphic soils or in dryer areas with rocky, poor, shallow soils. Vegetation types include seasonally wet grasslands at elevations of 1100 to 1600 meters as a small to large sized, cool growing terrestrial with an erect stem carrying 4 to 6, spirally-alternate, linear, membranaceous, evenly distributed along the stem, decreasing in size towards the apex of the stem, blade appressed to the stem or ascending, apex acuminate leaves that blooms in the summer and fall on an erect, 3.2 to 5.6" [8 to 14 cm] long, lax, secund to subsecund, 4 to 16 flowered inflorescence with green, elliptical or lanceolate, apex caudate, those of the base equal or longer than the pedicellate ovary, decreasing in size towards the inflorescence apex floral bracts and carrying resupinate, ascending, green, glaucous flowers.
"Similar to other species with long lateral segment of the petals and labellum such as H. culicina, H. gracilisegmenta, H. rodriguesii, H. setacea, and H. warmingii, but distinct by the linear, narrow leaves, .12 to .24" [.3 to .6 cm] wide, median sized flowers (e.g. dorsal sepal .24 to .32" [6 to 8 mm long), anterior segment of the petals 1.24 to 2.04" [31 to 51 mm] long, 4.4 to 6.4 times longer than the posterior sement, and the lateral segments of the labellum are 1.52 to 2.12" [38 to 53 mm long, 3.5 to 4.8 times longer than the median segment."
