Common Name Mendonca's Laelia [Luys de Mendonca e Silva, Brazilian editor of Revista Orquidea current]

Found in Minas Gerais state of Brazil in mountainous region in sandstone soil with organic matter amidst grasses and shrubs at elevations around 1030 meters as a natural hybrid between L munchowiana & Laelia nevesii as a mini-miniature [without inflorescence] sized, cool growing, caespitose lithophyte with a inconspicuous rhizome giving rise to green, obclavate pseudobulbs enveloped by papery, deciduous sheaths and carrying a single, fleshy, leathery, rigid, slightly curved and concave, narrowly elliptic, rounded, base leaf that blooms in the winter on a terminal, arising through a linear-truncated, oblique spathe, 16" [40 cm] long, successivevly few, 10 to 12 flowered inflorescence carrying yellow orange, shimmering textured flowers.
