Found in Bahia, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janiero, and Minas Gerais State of Brazil in shady, humid cool mountain locations at elevations of 400 to 1000 meters as a small sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte with clustered, terete pseeudobulbs partially enveloped basally by 2, acute leafless sheaths and carrying 1 or 2, apical leaves that blooms on a branched, 12" [30 cm] long, many [40] flowered inflorescence arising in the spring.

Newer references give O gutfreundiana as a synonym of this species but as of now I have left them separate.
