LATE EARLIER

Common Name Ramiro's Phragmipedium [Colombian orchid collector and enthusiast current]

Flower Size 1.8" [4.5 cm]

Found in Putumayo department of Colombia in very wet montane forests on wet rocky slopes at elevations of 1600 to 1700 meters as a small sized, cool growing, caespitose lithophyte with oblong, acute leaves that blooms in the late summer and earlier fall on an erect, unbranched, peduncle abbreviated, 3.6 to 4.8" [9 to 12 cm] long, successively single, few flowered inflorescnece with conduplicate, ovate-lanceolate, acute, green, shorter than the ovary floral bracts.

Similar in habit to P anguloi but distinguished by the much shorter dorsal sepal .4" [1 cm] versus .8" [2 cm] long in P anguloi, the shorter synsepal .48 x .36" [12 x 9 mm] versus .8 x .6" [20 x 15 mm]. The lip is urceolate .8 x .8 " [2 x 2 cm] versus nearly as long but only half as wide. , both species can be separated by the staminode which is elliptic with a rounded apex and rhombic and somewhat thickened in P anguloi versus rhombic witha somewhat thickened ridge along the midvein terminated with an elongate obtuse apex in P ramiroi. Similar but easily separated from P manzurii by the flower color and the presence of long soft hairs on the gymnostemium and petals. P fischeri has relatively long hairs on the petals but the staminode is tranversely pandurate. In general appearance of the flower it is similar to P schlimii but they have different staminodes. The closest relative is P andreettae which also has a somewhat asymetric staminode but its petals are obovate and there is no protruding ridge on the lip versus having a protruding ridge with a hook-like incurved apex. Additionally the leaves of P andreettae are prominently narrower reaching only to .8" [2 cm] wide versus 1.2" [3.5 cm] wide in P ramiroi." Szlatchetko & Kolanowska 2017
