Common Name The Painted Pleurothallis

Flower Size .08" [2 mm]

Found in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Fr Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in wet montane and piedmont forests at elevations of 70 to 2100 meters as a miniature sized, hot to cool growing, caespitose, epiphytic species is with short, minute, ramicauls encased by 3 shortly imbricate, open subtubular papery sheaths with a single, apical, narrowly oblanceolate, long attenuate, channeled to the petiolate base, apex tridenticulate, coriaceous, dark green leaf where it blooms in the spring through late summer on a lateral, 4" [10 cm] long, from the apex of the ramicaul [well developed erect one leafed stems], filiform [thin], slightly fractiflex [zigzagged], racemose, several [8 to 11] flowered inflorescence that is much longer than the leaves with minute, oblique, ovate-triangular, pale brown, less than half as long as the pedicel floral bracts.

Part of the Pleurothallis grobyi-picta alliance. Often sold as Pleurothallis marginata, a name that is no longer valid due to another plant with the same name, now Pleurothallis alata, and by precedence is Pleurothallis picta which was published first. This species is often also confused with Pleurothallis pissina which has successively opening flowers while P picta has simultaneously opening flowers.
