Common Name The Remote Flower Pleurothallis

Flower Size .4" 1 cm]

Found in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia in wet montane forests at elevations of 1700 to 2500 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing subrepent-ascending epiphyte with an abbreviated, terete-cylindrical setem enveloped completely by a papyraceous, subcoriaceous, subancipitous, acute sheath and carrying a single, apical, narrowly obovate-oblanceolate, minutely and irregularily emarginate apically, midvein protruding abaxially into a small apicule, gradually tapering into a deeply conduplicate petiolate base leaf with strongly ancipitous margins that blooms in the spring summer and fall on an erect-ascending, born laterally from the apex of the stem, without an annulus, peduncle flattened, ancipitous, provided with 4 to 5 distant, amplectent, ancipitous, subacute bracts, to 12" [30 cm] long, rachis to 16" [40 cm] long, a lax, distichous, successively 4 to 7 flowered inflorescence with infundibuliform, broadly ovate, abaxially ancipitous, acute to subacuminate, shorter than the pedicel floral bracts.

"The repent habit, lax inflorescence, and subcampanulate, orange flowers provided with obtuse, nonapiculate petals easily distinguish P deuteroremotiflora from P endotrachys and P spectabilis, to which it is most similar. It has non-mucronate petals like P pfavii, but the latter has a caespitose habit (vs. repent in p remotiflora), congested inflorescence (vs. lax), yellow flowers with red petals (vs. orange), and oblong, entire column wings (vs. triangular, denticulate)." Pupulin, Karremans and Gravendeel 2012

P deuteroremotiflora is part of the P endotrachys complex and closely related species, including P endotrachys , P deuterodunstervillei, P spectabilis, P pfavii, P juddii, P fulgens, P guanacastensis and P montezumae.
