Found in Cauca department of Colombia at elevations of 2800 to 3200 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with stout, erect ramicauls enveloped by a tubular sheath below the middle and another 2 at the base and carrying a single, apical, suberect to nearly horizontal, coriaceous, ovate, subacute, cordate below into the sessile base leaf that blooms in the late spring through mid fall on a short to .08 to .12" {2 to 3 mm] long, arising through and concealed by a reclining spathe, successively single, few flowered inflorescence with a tubular, half as long to just short of the pedicel floral bract.
"Noted for its acute sepals each about 1" [2.5 cm] long, a three veined dorsal sepal, decurved, slender, denticulate petals and an oblong lip about .6" [1.5 cm] long, similar to P adonis but instead of an erect, tubular lip, the large oblong lip lies within the synsepal." Luer 2005
P sotarae, is similar to P adonis P deflexa, P siphoglossa, P linguifera, P millei, P grandiflora, and P sarcochila in the large sized flowers.
