EARLY
Common Name The Ceasar Ponthieva [A department of Colombia]
Flower Size
Found in Cesar and Cundinamarca departments in subparamo in sandy, rocky soil at elevations of 1880 to 2800 meters of Colombia as a medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with 3 to 4, basal, rosulte, oblanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, acute, somewhat oblique, margins densely hirsute, blade sparsely hirsute, 7.2" [18 cm] long, petiolate base leaves that blooms later fall and winter on an erect, terminal, peduncle to16" [40 cm] long, hirsute, provided with 2 sheathing bracts, rachis to 2.8" [7 cm] long, laxly 10 flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acute, much shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small reen flowers with green sepals and a yellow lip with dark green lines.
"Similar to Ponthieva similis, a species widely distributed from Peru to Colombia. Ponthieva cesarensis and P. similis are easily separable by some floral character: free lateral sepals found in P. cesarensis, versus lateral sepals connate almost to the apex in P. similis, cuneate base of petals in this species versus unguiculate base in P. similis. Additionally, the lip callus is very prominent in P. similis and very obscure in P. cesarensis. It is also similar to Ponthieva villosa. Ponthieva cesarensis can be easily distinguished from P. villosa by the form of lip which is oblong-obovate in outline (vs. triangular-ovate, with cuneate base), and unlobed, roof-like callus (vs. callus obscurely bilobed). Unlike P. villosa the lip of P. cesarensis is devoid of basal lip auricles. The Lip lamina is similar in form to Ponthieva curvilabia, but unlike the latter species the lip of P. cesarensis is subsessile, and the lateral sepals have a narrow, cuneate base."
