Common Name or Meaning The Volcano Pleurothallis [refers to El Hato del Volcan in Chiriqui Panama]

Found in Cartago province of Costa Rica and Chiriqui province of Panama in cloud forests at elevations around 1400 to 1500 meters as a small sized, cool growing, caespitose epiphyte with slender, terete ramicauls enveloped basally by 1 to 2 close, tubular sheaths and another below the middle and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, ovate, acuminate, acute, broadly cuneate to rounded basally, sessile leaf that blooms in the fall and winter on a weak, suberect, arising through a slender spathe, 3.6 to 7.2" [9 to 18 cm] long, laxly several [5 to 11] flowered, secund, racemose inflorescence with a much shorter than the pedicel floral bract.
"Closely allied to Pleurothallis longipedicellata and Pleurothallis rowleei but differs in the thrice smaller flowers with entire petals. The flowers are not much smaller than Pleurothallis dentipetala but differs in the longer pedicels as well as the smaller habit and entire petals. Recognized by the slender ramicauls, ovate, acuminate leaves and very small, pastel colored, relatively long-pedicellate flowers borne in a loose raceme that exceeds nearly twice its length. The concave, acuminate dorsal sepal and synsepal spread to expose the minute lip flanked by entire, extended petals. The petals of all related species are denticulate or ciliate." Luer 1998
