"Characterized by the thickly coriaceous leaves that are more or less similar except for the pendent leaves of M caesia and the long-petiolate leaves of M torta. The inflorescence is single flowered, the flower often maloderous, the peduncle is terete, the ovary is smooth, the sepals are thick, fleshy, variously connate into a cup or tube, and often verrucose within, and the petals are cartilaginous without a prominent, descending process, but the labellar margin is often obtusely angled. The lip is thick, more or less oblong and undivided by lateral folds [with rare partial exceptions] and the obtuse apex is verrucose [also with rare exceptions]. The base of the lip is more or less cordate with the basal lobes often concave and nectariferous." Luer 2000

"Characterized by the caespitose plants with coriaceous, petiolate leaves, the elongate peduncle is slender, terete and single flowered. The ovary is smooth. The usually widely spread, more or less similar, long tailed sepasl are connate basally into a shallow, gaping, sepaline cup. The column with flanking petals and lip stand more or less erect and usually exposed conspicuously in the center of the flower. The sepals are shallowly connate or connate below the middle into a widely expanded cup with an exposed lip and column flanked by the petals. The petals are cartilaginous and carinate along the labellar margin, usually with a well developed, retrorse, tooth-like process at the base. The lip is thin, flat and more or less oblong, with the disc smooth or with a low pair of longitudinal calli. There is sometimes minimal thickening toward the base. The apex is usually broadly obtuse without a proximal constriction. However, the lip is often more or less narrowed below the apex. The lip is not sigmoid when viewed from the side as is often seen in the subsection Oscilantes. A callus is usually present at the apex in both subsections. The base is delicately hinged on the end to a free extension of the end of the column foot. In those species with the column, lip and petals in a more or less horizontal position, the lip may be passively motile as in subsection Oscilantes so a species should be sought in either subsection." SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Masdevallia SUBSECTION Coccineae Veitch 1889

Characterized by the single, brightly colored flowers with a comparitively narrow, sepaline tube, beyond which the lateral sepals are variously connate into a widely expanded lamina that is longer than the tube. The petals, lip and column are located deeply within the tube, The petals are callous along the labellar margin with a simple basal process. The lip is oblong and simple. Unusual deviations include M deformis with a spiculate margin of the lip and M rosea subsp echinata with a spiculate apex of the lip.

"Characterized by a variety of combinations of features, all eight sections share the following characters. A single flower which, in many species is followed by a second, smooth ovaries that are more or lessshallowly sulcate between the carpels: and sepals connate for varying distances form above the base to near the apex to form a sepaline cup or tube of varoius shapes. The callus on the labellar half of the petals is extremely variable, even sometimes absent. The lip is simple, commonly with a longitudinal pair of low calli, and the base is hinged to an extension from the tip of the column foot." Luer 2000

SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Madevallia SUBSECTION Oscillantes Luer 1986

"Characterized by the lip with wing-like , lateal margins often modified into lobes and a base that is delicately hinged or balanced by a thin, flat, strap-like extension from the column foot. The slightest breeze will cause the lip to oscillate. In some species of the subsection Caudatae and Alatacaules eg. Masdevallia pinocchio the lip may also oscillate. In some speceies the lip is intermediate between Oscillantes and Caudatae so both subsections should be examined. " Luer 2000

SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Saltatrices (Rchb.f) Luer 1986

Characterized by the single flowered inflorescence with sepals deeply connate into a cylindrical tube that is much longer than the obtuse to abruptly caudate, free portions that often are more or less similar to each other. The tube is usually ventricose below or near the middle and constricted to some degree near or above the middle. The petals and lip are deep within the tube and out f sight. The petals are callous along the labellar margin with oe without a well developed proces at or above the base. The lip is simple with the disc either featureless or with a pair of low longitudinal calli. The lip is distinctly bicallous in M x ligiae a presuned natural hybrid, sugesting a species of SECTION Polyanthe as one of the parents. It is included here in this section because of the ventricose and constricted sepaline tube.

The lip is not as thick and verrucose as in SECTION Coriaceae, and is also more or less oblong and shallowly sulcate centrally between a longitudinal pair of low calli that do not form marginal folds, but occasionally the calli converge.
